While the world may not have mourned the loss of the ’83 Challenger, we feel that people are too quick to derisively dismiss this RWD Chrysler that could. Among its peers, the second generation Challenger stood its ground and reflected the wider economic circumstances of the time. The monstrous muscularity that the first-generation Challengers represented, the 71 and 72 model years in particular – was brought down by energy insecurity and changing political ideas.
The second-generation foreshadowed a deeper partnership between Chrysler and Mitsubishi – one that would spawn the 4G63T, which is among the most legendary four-cylinder engines of its era – and precluded the formation of Diamond Star Motors and the cars the DSM partnership built. For as much acclaim as the Eagle Talon and Mitsubishi Eclipse sport compact cars earned, it was because of the Challenger – and the Galant and Sapporo – that they existed in the first place.
